Jared and Kelsey’s River Point Park Proposal: A Perfect Start to Their Day in Chicago
Thinking about proposing in Chicago? See how Jared surprised Kelsey with a proposal at River Point Park and get tips for planning your own engagement in the city.
Why Choose River Point Park for a Proposal?
Located along the Chicago River, River Point Park is a scenic spot offering panoramic views of the city skyline. It’s a great proposal location for couples who love cityscapes, waterfront views, and a peaceful yet central spot to pop the question. The park is easily accessible and provides a perfect pause between exploring downtown Chicago’s landmarks.
How Did Jared Plan the Perfect Proposal?
Jared and Kelsey planned a day trip into the city, taking the METRA train downtown—a nostalgic and convenient way to enjoy a stress-free day in Chicago. Once they arrived at Ogilvie Station, they made their way toward Michigan Avenue, stopping at River Point Park to take in the views. As they reached the perfect spot, Jared led Kelsey toward the water, setting the stage for the big moment.
To keep things natural, we opted for a candid photography approach. I positioned myself at a distance, waiting for Jared to get into place. As he took Kelsey’s hands and got down on one knee, I captured every moment of surprise and joy. Once they had a chance to soak in the excitement, I introduced myself, congratulated them, and we started their engagement session!
What’s the Best Time of Year for a Proposal at River Point Park?
Jared and Kelsey’s proposal took place in March, when the weather was still chilly but the sun was shining, and hints of spring were beginning to peek through. If you’re planning a proposal here, consider the best seasonal factors:
Spring (March-May): Mild temperatures, blooming flowers, and longer daylight hours make for beautiful photos.
Summer (June-August): Warmer weather and vibrant greenery, but expect more crowds.
Fall (September-November): Crisp air and changing leaves create a cozy, romantic backdrop.
Winter (December-February): Fewer crowds, but you’ll need to bundle up—snow-covered scenery can add a magical touch!
What to Know About Timing & Crowds
Since River Point Park is in a prime downtown location, timing is important. Weekdays tend to be quieter, making it easier to find a private moment, while weekends often bring more visitors enjoying the park and nearby attractions.
Morning (before 11 AM): Best for a quieter, more private proposal.
Afternoon: A bit busier with locals and visitors enjoying the riverwalk.
Evening (Golden Hour & Nighttime): The city lights reflecting on the water make for a stunning backdrop. Might even run into a few other couples taking photos at this amazing location.
What Are the Best Photo Spots Near River Point Park?
After the proposal, we took a stroll around the park for some romantic engagement photos. Jared and Kelsey were absolutely glowing, sharing laughs and taking in the excitement of the moment. Here are some top spots for post-proposal portraits:
The Chicago Riverwalk: Just a short walk away, this stretch offers stunning angles of the city skyline.
The Wrigley Building: A classic Chicago landmark with elegant architecture. While photography is allowed, professional sessions may require a permit, so it's best to check in advance.
The Rookery Building: If you're looking for indoor elegance, this historic building is a great option.
